Biography
I advise on a broad range of estate and succession planning for UK private clients (and, occasionally, those with a foreign connection).
I have particular expertise in advising business owners and clients with agricultural interests on succession planning considerations. I also advise on tax planning for the family home (and other property), wills, trusts and corporate structures.
In addition to advising on the estate tax implications, much of my work involves addressing the issue of wealth protection more generally, which is a growing concern for many of my clients.
What inspired you to get into law?
I suppose that I had my heart set on becoming a lawyer at a relatively young age, influenced in no small part by my maternal grandparents who practised in Scotland.
The analytical skills developed during my university years as a student of Classics reinforced my desire to pursue a career in the law.
What do you do away from the office?
Living in the heart of the South Downs, we are extremely blessed to be surrounded by such beautiful countryside - and so, much of my time is spent exploring the area with our young daughter (if I haven’t been persuaded to dust down the golf clubs!). I am also Chairman of our Parish Council which brings its own, and very different, challenges!
Testimonials
"My mother and I were pleased to be able to have a Teams meeting with Simon Mackie regarding Inheritance Tax planning for my mother's estate.
Simon's advice was given in a logical and clear way and he was able to answer all the questions we had including the answer to a specific question on this matter by email afterwards. Having obtained Simon's advice, my mother is now able to decide what to do with any inheritance tax liability her estate may have." - 5* Trustpilot review
"As a new client with Irwin Mitchell from initial contact through to completion I was absolutely delighted with the service given. The whole matter was dealt with by Simon Mackie before my previous solicitor responded to my initial enquiry." - 5* Trustpilot review
