Royal Air Force - England 10-01-2007

On 10th January 2007 an RAF Squirrel HT1 helicopter crashed whilst on a training flight in England. Immediately prior to the collision the Instructor, employed by FB Heliservices Ltd, initiated a simulated hydraulics failure exercise known as an engine off landing (“EOL”). The helicopter descended from above a second helicopter simultaneously performing an EOL. The two helicopters’ rotor blades overlapped, causing loss of control to both helicopters, one of which struck the ground and rolled over, coming to a rest on its roof. The Instructor pilot was tragically killed and the student pilot sustained serious facial and head injuries which continue to affect his ability to fly in the RAF. A Board of Inquiry was convened with the cause of the crash being Pilot error and failure of safety processes.
