Why did you choose your particular apprenticeship?
I’m taking the CILEx Paralegal apprenticeship - Level 3 Standard
I chose this particular apprenticeship because I wanted to improve my fundamental understanding of the law and build my legal skill set. This will allow me to work more independently and take on more complex cases.
What do you like about the apprenticeship?
What I like about the apprenticeship is that it provides flexibility. That’s really valuable to me because it allows me to work full time whilst also completing my studies.
What do you get up to in your role day to day?
As a paralegal, I support my colleagues with their case load while also managing my own under supervision. Day to day I communicate with clients, experts and barristers, draft legal documents, do hours of research, and prepare bundles for hearings, as well as doing general administration duties.
I work four days a week and use the fifth day for studying.
What training and support are you given?
I get a lot of training and support for my CILEx qualification. I go to bi-weekly workshops that cover different areas of law and practice as well as group coaching sessions to discuss professional and legal skills. I also go to regular meetings with my CILEx coach and line manager for feedback and to discuss my progress. On top of this, I also get a lot of support and advice from my colleagues.
Why would you encourage others to consider an apprenticeship at Irwin Mitchell?
Doing an apprenticeship lets you demonstrate your understanding of what you’ve learnt through your work, all collected through a portfolio. I would definitely encourage people to complete an apprenticeship because it can improve your confidence in a working environment, which you don’t always get with other types of learning. An apprenticeship also allows you to put your skills into practice.
